Children who face food insecurity do not perform as well in school as their food- secure counterparts. Zia (which means “auntie” in Italian) is a charitable organization that aims to combat the food insecurity of children in an urban educational setting so they have even more tools to get a great education, launching them into successful and happy lives.
Thanks to several community partnerships, Zia provides 8-10 meals a month for forty member families. By providing food items along with suggested recipes, client families can make
complete balanced meals. In addition, Zia also provides bread and sandwich supplies, so client families can have a quick and easy backup meal available
when needed.
Less than half of students who qualify for the federal breakfast program are able to access it. In addition, families who receive Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program benefits still miss 8-10 meals a month. Zia's team of volunteers is driven to see these statistics go to zero.
